At 6 St. Joseph House we have a very special volunteer. His name is Ernest Hum. Without question his exuberance lights a very special candle that burns bright as sunshine. Ernest is known for his zeal and, yes, his earnestness, a most friendly engaging manner, his soulful singing and guitar playing at Yellow Door Cafe, his digital artistry, his AutoCAD skills and a very special brand of volunteerism you don’t find everyday. Since his days as an architect, through downsizing, odd jobs including loading tractor trailers for same day cash, Ernest has learned the value of community. Instead of feeling sorry for himself or finding ways to ‘take’ from the system, Ernest discovered the joy of giving. Without question he is at his happiest while helping out - designing posters, blueprints or invitation cards, sweeping the floor wiping the counter or anything that needs to be done in a busy community house. Ernest learned about 6 St. Joseph House while at a Good Neighbours Club event. The band leader and long time St. Joe’s volunteer, Michael Cavanaugh, suggested Ernest attend community lunch and the Summer Solstice Street Fair. He’s been a steadfast volunteer here ever since. When asked why he likes 6 St. Joe’s so much, he answers, “It’s a great source of arts and culture, and you don’t have to get all boozed up to participate.” He goes on. “As far as I’m concerned non-profits are the heart and soul of cultural life in Toronto- in Canada in fact. I think that culture is critically important for national identity and that volunteerism plays a huge role in culture.” You can’t get more Ernest than that. |
